The remaining three Al-Jazeera journalists detained in Egypt on the spurious allegation of aiding and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood have been sentenced to years of imprisonment in a judgement delivered today. The three journalists have been in detention for six months, and on trial for four months.Baher Mohammed bagged 10 years imprisonment while Peter Greste and Mohamed Fahmy were sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. Their lawyers have promised to appeal the judgement.Unfortunately, the Egyptian court appeal process usually drags for too long.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, Amnesty International and people across the world have condemned the sentence as sheer injustice and an outrageous ruling. Egypt is notorious for being too harsh on journalists, often clamping them into detention over minor issues.
